Five WISSOTA Late Model specials highlight Norman County Raceway’s 2022 schedule

ADA, Minn. (March 4, 2022) – Norman County Raceway will host more WISSOTA Late Model events this coming season than it ever has in its 18 year history of weekly racing. A total of five Late Model events are on the schedule for 2022, including two featuring the NLRA Late Model touring series.

The two NLRA events are set for June 23, which will mark the return of Late Models at the Norman County Fair, a long-standing tradition at Norman County Raceway, and July 28. The WISSOTA Late Model events are scheduled for June 16, July 14 and August 11.

The second year of the IMCA Sprint Cars in the Red River Valley is set to be a big one as Norman County Raceway will host the winged warriors five times this season. The sprints will be a part of the season opener on May 26, June 23, July 14, July 21, and August 4. The June 23 event will feature the Minnesota Sprint Series. Last year, the series brought in a season-high car count for the Sprints.

Norman County Raceway’s third headline class – the Modifieds – will have six total shows, including five under the IMCA banner and one WISSOTA-sanctioned event. The IMCA Mods will debut on June 2 with a return on June 9. They will kick off the Ada Nationals on June 22 before returning to the three-eighths mile on August 4 and closing out the season on August 18.

The Advantage RV WISSOTA Modified Tour comes back to Norman County on July 21. Last year, the tour brought a season-high 28 Modifieds to NCR.

The Ada Nationals will be three nights of racing action during the Norman County Fair, starting June 22 featuring a 40-lap IMCA SportMod special. June 23 will bring in both NLRA Late Models and IMCA Sprints, along with the Rebel Midwest Modified Tour.

School bus racing will pack the stands once again on Saturday, June 25.

IMCA Stock Cars will have two specials in 2022, starting with the King Pin Klash, presented by The Bowler, on June 9 and the Sanders Metal Products Stock Car Challenge on July 28.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks will race for increased pay on August 4 as a part of their special event while the second annual Minn-Kota Lightning Sprints Summer Shootout returns the following week on August 11.

Weekly classes this season will be the fan-favorite IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, WISSOTA Midwest Mods and INEX Legends.

The full schedule will be released on March 26 at the Norman County Raceway / Red River Valley Speedway banquet in Ada.

Heinrich Wins Three-Wide Photo Finish At NCR

By Mike Spieker

ADA, Minn. (July 15, 2021) – Racing returned to the high banks of Norman County Raceway on Thursday night after a week off. Todd Heinrich, Brock Gronwold, Scott Jacobson, Brodee Eckerdt and Kevin Youngquist all visited KRJB/KRJM/KKCQ Victory Lane.

This week, the WISSOTA Modifieds make their annual visit to the speedway. The WISSOTA Mods made their first appearance in several years to NCR last year and brought a full field of 24 cars. This year, the WISSOTA Modified special will be complemented by the Advantage RV Modified Tour.

The race of the night on Thursday went to the IMCA Stock Cars.

Just as he has so many times this season, Trent Grager jumped out to the early lead of the Norman County Implement IMCA Stock Car feature. Hometown driver Kalvin Kesselberg and Travis Robertson raced for second on two distinctly different grooves around the three-eighths-mile oval.

Robertson rode the rim on the outside while Kesselberg hugged the bottom. With eight to go, the high side eventually bit Robertson as his No. 10R machine slid off the top of turn one to bring out the caution.

On the restart, Randy Klein rode second with Todd Heinrich in third. With two to go, Heinrich found his groove on the top side to become a contender.

On the final lap, the lead trio went three-wide coming off of turn four to the checkered flag. At the AuctionBlock.com Flagstand, it was Heinrich by a nose over Grager as Klein had to settle for third.

When asked if he had a shot at the win in the final laps, Heinrich said, “I honestly didn’t. I was racing with some really good competition. I have a lot of respect for them. All race long, I was trying to find the right way through the corner and after the yellow flag, things worked and I was able to get the win. I never expected it.”

Brock Gronwold came into Thursday’s races a perfect three-for-three in podium finishes at NCR, including one win. By the end of the night, Gronwold not only continued that streak but added another win to his stat line.

Gronwold jumped out to the early lead of the Christian Motors WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Behind him, Reise Stenberg, Aaron Blacklance, and Taylor Jacobson battled three-wide for the runner-up position. After Jacobson drifted back, Stenberg and Blacklance continued to battle wheel-to-wheel with Blacklance eventually taking the spot.

Blacklance then went to work on reeling in Gronwold for the lead. Blacklance pulled to within a car length of Gronwold near the midway point, but Gronwold went on to win by a comfortable margin.

Scott Jacobson and Torey Fischer had a good battle for the point to start the Titan Machinery IMCA SportMod feature. Fischer started third and Jacobson started fifth, but the pair ran one-two by lap four.

Fischer was strong, but Jacobson was able to find a way around her to take the lead. Once out front, Jacobson never looked back as he scored his first NCR win of 2021.

Brodee Eckerdt raced to the Christian Brothers Ford IMCA Hobby Stock feature win. The younger from Grand Forks, N.D. became the youngest winner and track champion at Red River Valley Speedway last season at age 14. Kevin Youngquist picked up the Hornet feature win.

Greseth returns to victory lane at NCR in front of packed house

By Mike Spieker

ADA, Minn. (June 24, 2021) – The NLRA Late Models returned as the headliner during the Norman County Fair last Thursday night. A standing-room-only crowd watched Harwood, N.D. driver Michael Greseth collect his 18th career Norman County Raceway win as he led every lap of the Late Model feature.

A heat of NLRA Late Models take the green flag in front of the packed grandstand Thursday night at Norman County Raceway. Photo by Steven Louis.

The win was the fourth different division in which Greseth has won at Norman County Raceway. He has 14 wins in the Mod Fours, one WISSOTA Modified win, and a pair of IMCA Modified victories.

“It’s great to be back (at Norman County Raceway). I haven’t been here in four or five years since I raced IMCA so it’s good to be back. It was a phenomenal track tonight. I can’t thank Norman County Raceway enough for bringing the Late Models here,” said NLRA rookie Greseth in KRJB/KRJM/KKCQ Victory Lane.

Greseth started on the outside of the front row and led the opening lap over Brody Troftgruben. The driver of the No. 17 never looked back and picked up the win. Four-time series champion Brad Seng finished second with Pat Doar, Shane Edginton, and Tyler Peterson, who was aboard the Donny Schatz Motorsports No. 15, rounded out the top five.

The Minnesota IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Car Series made their inaugural visit to NCR. A strong field of 10 cars made up the grid. This was the second-ever feature contested for the IMCA Sprints at NCR. The class, brand new to the region this season, runs weekly at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo. Trevor Serbus of Olivia, Minnesota led all 15 laps to claim the win over Ty Hanten, who picked up a feature win at NCR on June 10th.

Rich Pavlicek wasted no time moving from third to the lead on the opening lap of the Titan Machinery IMCA SportMod feature. Pavlicek moved by front row starters Vince Jegtvig and Brady Moore to assume the lead.

Pavlicek cruised to his third overall win of the season and second at NCR.

Trent Grager’s breakout season continued on Thursday as the Sykeston, N.D. racer claimed his fifth overall win of the season in the Norman County Implement IMCA Stock Cars. Grager chased down as passed hometown driver Kalvin Kesselberg with three laps to go to claim the win.

Four-cylinder Hornets made a rare appearance to NCR. A field of 17 took the green flag. Matt Pederson led wire-to-wire to claim the win.

This week at NCR is the King Pin Klash IMCA Stock Car special, presented by Seedex, and meet-n-greet night.

Ada drivers defend home turf at Norman County Raceway

By Mike Spieker

ADA, Minn. (June 17, 2021) – Norman County Raceway hosted its largest crowd of the season on Thursday night for the track’s annual Meet N Greet. All of the drivers parked their cars on the front straightaway during intermission and chatted with the fans and signed autographs for the kids.

This Thursday, NCR hosts the NLRA Late Models for the first time this season.

Ada drivers Kalvin Kesselberg and Andy Wagner defended their home track last Thursday night as both visited KRJB/KRJM/KKCQ Victory Lane.

Kesselberg played the role of crowd-pleaser with his late-race heroics in the IMCA Stock Car feature. The Ada, Minn. driver went toe-to-toe with veteran driver Rob VanMil in the final laps and pulled out the win. VanMil took the lead on lap two and held the point until the final lap when Kesselberg pulled alongside. The two traded a little paint, but Kesselberg held the advantage off the final corner and took the checkers to the roar of his hometown crowd.

“I just kept it smooth and hit my marks. Rob and I had an awesome race. He leaned on me, I leaned on him. It was a good clean race,” said Kesselberg after the race. “I love this place. This is my home. It’s awesome to get a win here.”

Andy Wagner took advantage of a restart during the IMCA SportMod feature to move past Torey Fischer to take the point. Fischer, who was in search of her first career SportMod win at NCR, looked to have the race in hand until the yellow flag flew. On the restart, Wagner motored by Fischer and the previous week’s winner, Rich Pavlicek, followed into second.

“The restart was my only chance to get to the bottom. Torey kind of bobbled and I snuck around and I just held my line on the bottom,” said Wagner after the race.

The area’s best IMCA Modified drivers were on hand last week for the Dakota Cat Shootout. The Dakota Cat-backed No. 72 of Dave Shipley picked up the win after a great battle with defending Shootout winner, Casey Arneson.

Arneson was within striking distance of Shipley in the closing laps, but Shipley ran perfectly in the final few circuits to capture the win.

Once Midwest Modified driver Brock Gronwold takes the lead, the race is usually over for the rest of the field. That wasn’t the case on Thursday, however. Gronwold drove by early race leader Reise Stenberg, but seventh-place starter Aaron Blacklance put in a late-race bid for the lead.

Blacklance caught and drove by Gronwold on the final lap steal the win from the defending track champion.

During the feature, Brady Jawaski’s took a hard hit to the outside retaining wall exiting turn four. Jawaski was okay, but his heavily damaged machine had to be removed from the speedway with two wreckers.

Bryce Haugeberg took the win in the Lucas Oil POWRi Minn-Kota Lightning Sprint feature.
