Skalicky Claims First Career Legends Win At Norman County Raceway

By Mike Spieker

ADA, Minn. (June 20, 2018) – Race fans were treated to Wednesday night racing at Norman County Raceway as a part of the 123rd Norman County Fair.

Kaitlyn Skalicky of Fargo has been racing with the Petermann Seed INEX Legends for the last six years. On Wednesday, she finally claimed that elusive first career victory. Starting on the outside of the front row, Skalicky took the early lead over Alex Braseth.

Meanwhile, Tim Estenson, who already has 10 wins on the season, sliced his way through the field from the eighth starting position. A restart with seven to go reset the field. Skalicky, Estenson, and Braseth raced three wide for the lead and Estenson looked to split the middle to take the lead.

Skalicky had the momentum on the high side and remained side by side with Estenson into turn three and reclaimed the lead exiting the corner.

Estenson mounted several charges on Skalicky in the final five laps. On the final lap, Estenson pulled even with Skalicky in turns three and four, but the bottom groove didn’t have the traction the top did as Skalicky won the drag race to the checkers.

Ada’s own Andy Wagner continued his dominance in the Titan Machinery IMCA SportMods.

Wagner, who is the defending SportMod track champion, notched his third win of the season from the pole position. Taylor Grove jumped out to the lead from the outside of the front row at the drop of the green flag. Wagner filed into second as Vince Jegtvig, Aaron Wetterlin and last week’s winner, Luke Johnson, raced for third through fifth.

Wagner remained within striking distance of the lead all race long and placed a bid for the lead with seven laps to go. Wagner dove to the inside of Grove, but Grove ran in the preferred high groove and held on to the point.

In the final five laps, Wagner was never less than two car lengths away from Grove as he prepared to mount another charge for the lead. With two laps to go, the leaders approached lapped traffic.

That’s when Wagner made his move.

Wagner found an opening around the outside of Grove to pull even with him out of turn two. However, there was a lapped car in the way of Wagner so he went a lane higher down the backstretch, dipping the right side tires off the track. Wagner cleared for the lead in turn three before the caution flew the following lap.

Wagner held off the pack on the final green-white-checkered restart to claim the win over Grove.

Rob VanMil of Barnesville led every lap of the Norman County Implement IMCA Stock Car feature. Friday’s winner at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, Brandon Schmidt, threatened to take the lead on the final lap, but VanMil held on for his third Stock Car win at NCR.

Michael Greseth of Harwood, N.D. picked up the opening night win in the Sanders Metal Products IMCA Modifieds to snap an 11-year winless streak at NCR back in May. On Wednesday night, he cruised to his second win of the season. Greseth and Jesse Skalicky led the field of 16 cars to the green flag. Greseth pushed in turns one and two, which allowed Skalicky to take the lead down the backstretch. Greseth reeled in the rookie Modified driver and took the lead exiting turn four to lead lap one.

Once out front, Greseth checked out from the field.

Greseth comfortably took the win by nearly six seconds, equating to over a full straight away, over Rob VanMil.

Trautner Visits Victory Lane at Norman County Raceway

By Mike Spieker

ADA, Minn. (June 7, 2018) – A big crowd of race fans packed Norman County Raceway’s Family Night, presented by Titan Machinery, on Thursday. Next week is Dollar Hot Dog Night at the races.

Jamie Trautner of Hendrum picked up the Sanders Metal Products IMCA Modified feature win after a great battle with Tyler Hall. Hall led the field in the early going as Trautner filed into second ahead of Rob VanMil. Trautner peaked to the inside of Hall on lap three and pulled even with him down the back straightaway.

Photo: Jamie Trautner picked up a thrilling IMCA Modified feature win Thursday at Norman County Raceway in Ada.

The lead duo traded the top spot for the next three laps before Trautner prevailed to take the point. Hall remained within striking distance of Trautner for the next several laps. At the halfway point, Hall made one more charge on Trautner as they swapped lanes around the high-banked three-eighths-mile dirt oval.

Trautner eventually stretched out his advantage in the late stages of the race. Trautner went on to claim his first Norman County Raceway win since June 22, 2017.

The Titan Machinery IMCA SportMods had the wildest race of the evening. Brandon Tendeland led the opening laps until Luke Johnson claimed the lead on lap five. Aaron Wetterlin followed Johnson into second.

A restart with six laps to go made for one of the best battles for the lead seen all season at Norman County Raceway. Wetterlin took the lead with five laps to go, but Johnson came back with a big slide job in turn three to reclaim the spot. Wetterlin drove around Johnson in turns one and two before Johnson executed another textbook slide job on Wetterlin at the same end of the speedway.

Johnson held on to the lead with two laps to go until he spun out on his own in turn three and collected Wetterlin. Johnson was called for the caution as Wetterlin inherited the lead for the restart.

Wetterlin went on to take the win as Kelly Jacobson edged out Andy Wagner for third. Wagner, who is the current point leader, rebounded for a podium finish after clipping an infield tire barrier earlier in the race.

Rick Schulz, who barrel-rolled his IMCA Stock Car, last Friday at Red River Valley Speedway, jumped out to the lead of the Norman County Implement feature. Schulz held the lead until Rob VanMil tracked him down and took the point with six laps to go. Once out front, VanMil opened up a big lead and earned the win.

Tim Shiek picked up the Christian Brothers Ford IMCA Hobby Stock feature win. The win was his fifth in the last seven races overall.

After picking up his first career Christian Motors WISSOTA Midwest Modified win at Norman County Raceway last week, Lance Schill of Langdon, N.D. went back-to-back. Schill moved into second in the early going from his third starting position. With 11 laps to go, Schill had reeled in Jeff Nelson for the lead. Schill searched for a way around Nelson for two circuits until he found enough momentum on the high side of turn two to take the lead down the back straightaway.

A late race restart set up a green-white-checkered finish. Fifth place starter, Justin Froemming, drove his car deep into turn one as the race resumed and pulled even with Schill, but Schill was able to power back by before cruising to the win.

Weekly Thursday Night Thunder classes will be in action next week, plus the NLSA Lightning Sprints. Green flag drops at 7 pm.

Peterson Drives to Modified Win at Norman County Raceway

By Mike Spieker

ADA, Minn. (May 31, 2018) – Norman County Raceway’s centennial anniversary season continued Thursday night at the Norman County Fairgrounds. The fan-favorite meet-n-greet, presented by Kelly’s Chrysler Center and Lee Bros. Sales, drew a strong crowd. Kids and adults alike met their favorite drivers, got autographs, candy, and other giveaways during intermission.

Tyler Peterson made his 2018 debut at NCR on Thursday night and wasted no time getting to victory lane. The Hickson, N.D. driver drove from the fifth row to win the 20-lap Sanders Metal Products IMCA Modified feature.

At the drop of the green flag, a three-wide race for the lead broke out between Brady Petermann, Justin Jones, and Tyler Hall. Jones led the opening lap as Petermann and Bryce Borgen filed into second and third, respectively. At the halfway point, Petermann placed a bid for the lead on Jones and took the top spot. Peterson followed in Petermann’s tire tracks and moved into second.

Tyler Peterson (1TPO) and Rob VanMil (4D) race side by side during IMCA Modified heat race action Thursday at Norman County Raceway.

With five circuits remaining, Peterson had reeled in Petermann and drove to the outside to take the lead exiting turn two. Peterson withstood a restart with two laps to go to take the win.

Lance Schill made the haul to Ada from Langdon, N.D. for the second consecutive week and left town with the Christian Motors WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature win. Schill jumped out to the early lead from the pole position as Brock Gronwold moved into second. Schill quickly put several car lengths between himself and Gronwold and held a comfortable lead until the caution waved with four laps to go.

On the restart, Gronwold placed a bid for the lead in turn one, but Schill was able to fend off the charge. Jason Strand took advantage of the restart to move into third from the eighth starting position. Schill held off Gronwold on the final lap to claim his first-ever win at NCR.

Andy Wagner’s Titan Machinery IMCA SportMod track championship title defense is off to a good start. Wagner picked up his second consecutive win to start the 2018 season. Noah Metzger grabbed the early lead at the drop of the green, but Aaron Wetterlin stole the point on lap four as Wagner followed him into second. With 11 laps to go, Wetterlin looped his No. 3W machine right in front of the field. Wagner inherited the lead but had his hands full with Kelly Jacobson in the closing laps. Wetterlin drove through the field and became a contender in the late stages, but Wagner hung on for the win over Jacobson and Wetterlin.

Rick Schulz cruised to the Norman County Implement IMCA Stock Car feature win. The Horace, N.D. driver led every lap of the race to pick up his first win of the 2018 season.

Tye Wilke also visited KRJB 106.5FM Victory Lane for the first time in his career. Kaitlyn Skalicky and Chad Sogge battled for the race lead early on. Sogge took the position and held the point until seven laps remained. Sogge’s machine suddenly slowed off turn four, which handed the lead over to a hard-charging Wilke. Wilke cruised to the win as Dean Julsrud stole second at the line over Sogge.

Racing continues next Thursday night at Norman County Raceway, presented by Titan Machinery. All weekly Thursday Night Thunder divisions will be in action, plus IMCA Hobby Stocks. Green flag drops at 7 pm.

Norman County Raceway’s Centennial Season is Underway

By Mike Spieker

ADA, Minn. (May 24, 2018) – The 100th anniversary season of Norman County Raceway is off and running. The great crowd on hand was treated to race teams from all over the tri-state region Thursday, who flocked to the high-banked three-eighths-mile oval for opening night.

The night was highlighted by the running of the inaugural Dakota Cat Modified Shootout. A stout field of 16 IMCA Modifieds were checked in. Michael Greseth and Dev Malmlov led the field to the green flag. On the initial start, Malmlov entered turn one too high and slid off the embankment, bringing out the caution. As a result, Malmlov was sent to the tail of the field.

Photo: Michael Greseth claimed his first win at NCR since July 21st, 2007 and 16th NCR win overall. (Photo Courtesy Speedway Shots)

As the race resumed, Greseth jumped out to the early lead over Billy Vogel and Modified rookie, Jesse Skalicky. Greseth quickly opened up a comfortable lead as Vogel and Skalicky battled for second. At the midway point, Vogel and Skalicky’s battle turned into a fight for third as Austin Arneson drove by both of them.

Arneson then set his sights on Greseth, who was enjoying a full straightaway lead. Arneson searched all over the racing surface but didn’t have enough speed to reel in Greseth.

Greseth cruised to the win, which was his first at NCR since July 21st, 2007 and 16th overall.

Ada’s own Andy Wagner picked up the IMCA SportMod feature. Wagner, who is coming into 2018 as the defending track champion, picked up where he left off last season leading Thursday’s feature wire to wire.

Luke Johnson, who started sixth, and Aaron Wetterlin, who started 10th, moved into second and third respectively, but couldn’t run down Wagner.

Wagner went on to visit KRJB 106.5FM Victory Lane by a margin of eight car lengths.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature was stacked with former national and track champions throughout the field. Dustin Strand grabbed the early lead with Lance Schill and Brock Gronwold in tow. Strand ran a smooth line around the low side of the speedway, while Schill drove his No. 17 machine deep into the corners. Schill reached the back bumper of Strand once in turns three and four, making slight contact, but that’s as close as he would get to Strand.

Strand went on to claim his 23rd career Midwest Mod win and 34th win overall at NCR.

Tim Shiek led from green to checkers to take the IMCA Hobby Stock feature win.

Rob VanMil picked up the IMCA Stock Car feature win. Rick Schulz held the lead in the opening laps with VanMil hot on his heels. It only took one slight slip by Schulz for VanMil to capitalize on. Schulz’s right rear tire dipped off the banking in turn one, which was all that VanMil needed to get by and take the lead. Once out front, VanMil pulled away to take the win.

Racing continues next Thursday, May 31st at Norman County Raceway with the fan-favorite Meet N Greet night. During intermission, all the drivers will bring their cars on the front straightaway and fans will be able to walk down, meet their favorite drivers, get autographs and take pictures. Green flag drops at 7 pm.
